Every student can get their desired grades in school: But with the application of the right study skills.

Nothing hurts a parent more than watching their child try hard to improve their grades and academic gains unsuccessfully. I am talking about a child passionate about school, enjoys their classes, relates well with classmates, loves their teachers, and does their homework religiously. If you are familiar with this situation, the solution to your child’s problem is developing practical study skills. How did your child learn to ride a bicycle? Most probably, you gave them a few lessons, and then they thoroughly practiced.  That is the same criteria you should use to improve their studying skills.

Continue reading to get the BEST FIVE TIPS to develop your child’s study skills that will translate to better grades.

One: Designate a Good Studying Space for Your Child:

A good studying space varies from one child to another. Some children concentrate in busier environments, while others thrive in more quiet areas. If your child is a loner, set a calm space in their bedroom, or carve a space in the family room if your child thrives in a busy environment. Secondly, make the study space comfortable but not too comfy. For example, you can make their study chair comfy, but don’t allow them to lie on the bed when studying. Also, ensure that their working bench is waist-height and their feet comfortably rest on the ground. Ensure that the table is large enough to accommodate all the study materials and the room’s lighting is good—lastly, limit levels of distraction in the room.

Two: Develop a Work Plan

Proper time management is key to effective studying. Help your child to create a good homework planner.  Ensure that they do not procrastinate over their schoolwork and that they complete all their assignments. Also, break down big projects into small milestones that will be easy for your child to achieve. Making school workload manageable will reduce last-minute rush and cramming, which will translate to success in class.

Three: Teach Them How to Take Effective Study Notes

Another way to improve your child’s studying is by teaching them how to take practical notes in school. Note-taking notes make it easy for students to remember and process what they learned in class. It also helps them to retain more information that allows them to pass their exam. Studies show that hand-writing notes lead to more retention of information than not tasking notes or recording information.  You can train your child to make notes or highlight important information when learning. Also, please encourage them to build good handwriting for easy revising of notes.

Four: Encourage Your Child to Ask For Help

Please encourage your child to speak out when they have a problem. Be available for them when they do their homework and encourage them to ask questions in class whenever they don’t understand something.  Let your child know that all people need help at some point in life, and it is always okay to ask for help. It would help if you also talked to the teacher whenever you have a concern. Further, teach your child to work and build a good relationship with fellow students. Asking for help from students is another important way of getting academic support that can improve their study experience.

Five: Encourage Your Child to Join a Study Group

Study groups play a significant role in improving your child’s study experience. Sharing a study space with peers can help children pick up new study patterns and skills that can help them cope with complex subjects. A study group can also improve your child’s thoughts and patterns of study.  Studying with friends can be exciting and fun and can help your child break the monotony of studying alone.  Study groups make learning enjoyable instead of a draining activity.  Unlike individual studying, that can be frustrating, boring, and a waste of time, studying with friends motivates and encourages your child to work harder. Learning with peers will also involve sharing ideas and brainstorming, which translates to better understanding and performance in the exam.

Take Away:

Teaching your child how to study is a skill that will improve their grades in school and benefit them all through their life.  Proper study skills require a lot of patience and time before being realized.  These tips will help your child discover what works best for them and eventually translate to excellence.
